Founded by Ian Herdell in 2015, Cambrian Company is a furniture studio rooted in the belief that meaningful design begins with respect for material and process. From our workshop in Durham, North Carolina, we create solid wood furniture that balances thoughtful design with the quiet integrity of handcraft. 

Each piece is built in small batches using sustainably harvested domestic hardwoods, shaped with care, guided by grain, and made to endure. Our work reflects a simple philosophy: that beauty arises when form, function, and honesty meet.

For over fifteen years, Ian Herdell has designed and built custom furniture and artwork for clients around the world. Over time, his focus turned toward the possibilities of small-scale production, a way to preserve the integrity of handcraft while making beautiful, enduring furniture more accessible. 

This approach became the foundation of Cambrian Company’s first two collections, Cambrian and Arthropod.  a continuation of Ian’s ongoing exploration of form, material, and the quiet discipline of making.
