FAQs
Materials, Finish & Sustainability
Each piece is handmade using sustainably harvested domestic hardwoods and finished using a highly resilient, 0-VOC hardwax oil.
Caring for your furniture
One of the great benefits of solid wood is that it is crafted to be enjoyed for generations. Over the first few months, as the oil finish cures and the wood matures, the patina may change and get a bit richer in tone. This is most noticeable in woods such as Cherry, which will become darker and richer just within the first few months. We recommend periodically moving items sitting on the wood surface so the patina develops evenly for the first couple of months. To ensure the beautiful luster of your furniture is maintained, we recommend applying Rubio Monocoat Renew every 6-12 months.
When will I receive my order?

Warranty and Returns
We offer a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner of the piece. The warranty covers any defects that occur with the furniture structure or wood materials. The warranty does not cover wear and tear or misuse.
What inspires your work?
My work is inspired by history, especially the Cambrian Period—an era when extraordinary new life forms began to emerge. I strive to capture the creativity and wonder of that time in each piece I make.
What materials do you use?
I use a variety of North American hard and soft woods, both commercially available and found/foraged materials. Found wood is carefully sterilized with heat to ensure it is insect-free. I also incorporate shop sawn veneers, crushed mussel shell, and fine charcoal mixed with resin for unique embellishments.
How is your marquetry created?
Original marquetry images are crafted from shop sawn and commercially dyed veneers, most of which are at least 1/16″ thick. This thickness allows the veneers to behave more like solid wood, adding depth and durability.
What finishes do you use?
Each piece is finished with Rubio Monocoat, a non-toxic, penetrating oil finish that is easy to repair and safe for your home.
Are your materials sustainably sourced?
I make every effort to source wood responsibly, using fallen branches, reclaimed logs, and sustainably harvested materials whenever possible.
Can I commission a custom piece?
Yes! I welcome custom commissions. Please reach out through the Contact page to discuss your ideas and needs.
How do I care for my furniture or wall art?
Rubio Monocoat makes maintenance simple—most marks or scratches can be spot-repaired. For day-to-day care, use a soft, damp cloth and avoid harsh chemicals.
What is marquetry?
Marquetry is the art of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns, designs, or pictures. Each marquetry piece I create is original and crafted by hand.
